A Congolese NGO dedicated to promoting MHPSS and peacebuilding in communities affected by war and conflict by engaging men and boys.
Living Peace Institute (LPI) is a Congolese non-governmental organization based in Goma since 2015. We work to promote mental health, psychosocial well-being, and social cohesion in communities affected by armed conflict.
Our programs support individuals, families, and communities facing trauma, helping them rebuild their lives and strengthen peaceful relationships.
LPI considers the gendered impact of war and conflict on men and women, boys and girls as crucial entry factors for ending SGBV in public and private spaces.
Our vision is to contribute to societies where men and women live in peace in their homes and in their communities and in which children grow up in a stable and peaceful environment
LPI’s mission is to strengthen peace in communities affected by violence by delivering and supporting MHPSS programmes that are trauma-informed, gender transformative, and engage men and boys. LPI promotes evidence-led practice and wider systems change through training, capacity building and research.
The principles that guide everything we do
We are committed to grounding our work in evidence. We continuously learn from research, experience, and evaluation to improve our approach and ensure our programmes create meaningful and lasting change.
Our work is rooted in the communities we serve. We prioritise local leadership, knowledge, and ownership, ensuring that programmes are responsive to local contexts and contribute to sustainable, locally driven change.
We act with honesty, professionalism, and transparency in all aspects of our work. We hold ourselves accountable to the communities we work with, our partners, and our supporters.
We treat all people with dignity and respect. We value diversity and promote equality and inclusion in our programmes, partnerships, and organisational culture.
We foster a culture of solidarity, trust, and mutual support among staff, partners, and communities, recognising that meaningful change requires collaboration and shared commitment.
From research to global impact: the evolution of Living Peace
Research shows link between male traumatisation and SGBV. The DRC IMAGES study reveals critical connection between trauma and violence in conflict-affected communities.
Pilot targeting men and boys to end SGBV shows promising results through the LOGICA World Bank project. Methodology tested and validated.
Impact evaluation confirmed significant reduction of violence in families and communities. LPI opened doors in Goma and started implementing Living Peace groups.
Model tested and adapted to different target groups. RCT with 1,800 former participants shows long-lasting peace in families and communities.
For more than a decade, LPI interventions have contributed to lasting change
Reduction in mental health problems and substance abuse. Improvement of positive coping skills and confidence in others. Restored sense of belonging.
More gender-equitable behaviors. Improved communication in relationships. Reduction of violence against women and children.
LPI groups contributed to significant improvement of trust in families and increased social cohesion in communities.
